In the very early stages of From The Lake (2012), before a narrative was even established, Dearly Beloved was the second track composed. It just so happened that the music fit this beginning moment of the story so it ended up staying as the second track throughout the many tracklist revisions.

The Main Theme and Catastrophe's Theme can both be heard in this track, though are not very prominent. Although Dearly Beloved is about the finding of Defiance's body and the effect this has on the town (her lover, Catastrophe, and her sister, Persephone, in particular) I chose specifically to not dwell too much on major themes that occur later. The loss of Defiance is a major event for these people, and when mourning the loss of a loved one, individuality has a way of being stripped away in the grieving process.
